David Beckham reignites ‘proper’ parenting debate after kissing his 10-year-old daughter on the lips

David Beckham has reignited a debate over the “appropriateness” of kissing his 10-year-old daughter on the lips with a recent Instagram photo.

On Friday, the soccer star, 46, who has been repeatedly criticized for kissing his daughter, posted photos from a recent walk the couple shared.

“Dad and Princess Leia had a lovely walk this morning,” Beckham captioned two photos of him and his daughter Harper, including one in which the father-daughter duo can be seen kissing each other on the lips.

Despite wearing a somewhat humorous expression in the photo, which suggests Beckham knew about the kiss response, many people responded to the comments to share their discomfort with the athlete’s affection.

“Why are you kissing your daughter on the lips? This is weird and inappropriate,” one person commented, while another said, “Although this is very sweet, please don’t kiss your daughter on the lips.”

Someone else said, “Enough with the kisses on the lips already!!”

According to another reviewer, Beckham should “show [his] love” by “kissing on the forehead, cheek, etc. » but not on the lips because his daughter is « no longer a baby and kisses on the lips are unacceptable ».

In response to criticism of Beckham’s parenthood, many have come to the father-of-four’s defence, with some noting that they frequently kiss their own family members on the lips.

“I’m over 40 and I still kiss my mom on the lips AND I kiss my 11 and 14 year old sons on the lips. People need to worry about themselves and not some stupid bullshit” , one person commented.

Another said: “Beautiful. Expect the full bizarre “don’t kiss your child on the lips” comments.

It’s not the first time Beckham has found himself embroiled in controversy over his choice to kiss his daughter on the lips.

In 2017, Beckham addressed the backlash over a photo of him kissing his then five-year-old daughter during a Facebook Live chat, where he noted he was “actually criticized for kissing my daughter on lips the other day,” before adding, “I kiss all my kids on the lips.”

“Brooklyn, maybe not. Brooklyn is 18, he might find that a bit strange. But I am very affectionate with children. That’s how I was raised and [wife Victoria Beckham], and that’s how we are with our kids,” he said at the time. “We want to show our children that we love them and we protect them, we care for them and we support them, and we are very affectionate with them.”

Despite the explanation, in June 2019 Beckham was labeled ‘creepy’ by Piers Morgan, after he was again seen kissing then-seven-year-old Harper during a family boat trip in Miami. .

speaking on Hello BrittanyMorgan called the former England captain ‘scary’ and ‘weird’ for showing affection to his young child.

“That’s very nice, but why would a father kiss his daughter on the lips?” Morgana asked. “Don’t get it – scary. Weird. Then you post this for the world – you post this for the world, why?

“Weird, weird, weird, it’s just weird.”

Critics didn’t deter Beckham, however, as the athlete continued to kiss his daughter on the lips in public.

According to most child development experts, behavior is not something that should be called “inappropriate,” as Ollwyn Moran, neurodevelopmental therapist and CEO of Cognikids, once said. The Independent“Showing love and affection to your child is so important. Many scientific studies point to the importance of this.

“Besides, what concerns me the most is what’s on the minds of these people who denounce this natural behavior. Why sexualize it?

Child psychologist Dr Fiona Martin also agrees, as she has previously said that displaying parenthood is “beautiful” and that “anything that promotes emotional connectedness is good”.

“It’s definitely not inappropriate to kiss your child,” she added.

In addition to Harper, the Beckhams also share sons Brooklyn, 22, Romeo, 19, and Cruz, 16.
