Apathetic Jaguars spark media debate over Urban Meyer’s future in the NFL

The Urban Meyer the era did not get off to a hot start. Jacksonville has lost each of its first two preseason games. Meyer accepted the Jaguars job largely because of the young talent on the roster and the No. 1 overall pick in 2021. Jacksonville selected Clemson’s superstar quarterback Trevor Laurent. Meyer believed he could team up with Lawrence and rebuild the Jaguars quickly.

But after two consecutive frustrating first-string attacking performances throughout training camp, Meyer had a specific message for his team.

“The starting attack, two weeks in a row… we’re just struggling to find a certain rhythm,” said Meyer. “We’re not balanced right now. I’m looking for guys who show that spark, show that energy.”

First round pick Travis Etienne also suffered a foot injury against New Orleans. Drafting a first-round running back raised eyebrows in the NFL Draft evaluators when Jacksonville has other major holes, especially on its offensive line. But it’s the quarterback game that could define everything.

Meyer and Lawrence will be hip-strapped for years to come. Lawrence’s development is vital to the complete reconstruction of Jacksonville. He’s had flashes of brilliance, but other rookie quarterbacks have been more impressive throughout the preseason.
